What It Costs
We don't post a flat number here because spring repair cost swings on a few things: single or double door, one spring or a matched pair, and how long the torsion tube and drums have been running dry. A single spring on a standard double door is a different job than a matched pair that both let go at once, which happens more than you'd think once a set passes the age where one spring going means the other is close behind.
What we can tell you: we quote the job on site, before any work starts, and the quote covers spring size, drums, and cable if the cable's frayed from riding a wound-down spring. We don't upsell an opener replacement to fix a spring problem - if the opener's fine, it stays. If your door was installed anywhere in the wide range of build years common across this service area, from early-90s stock to houses finished in the 2000s, the spring size and mounting style can differ enough that a phone quote isn't honest. We'd rather look at it.
How It Shows Up
A torsion spring doesn't usually snap without warning. Most owners notice the door getting heavier to lift by hand, or the opener straining and making a grinding or labored sound partway through the cycle. Some hear a loud bang from the garage - that's the spring letting go, usually when nobody's touching the door at all.
Once it's gone, the door won't stay up on its own, and if you force it with the opener, you're putting that motor and the top panel under stress they weren't built for. A door that closes unevenly, dropping faster on one side, usually means one spring is still holding and the other has failed - not a full break yet, but close. Across the households we work in throughout this part of the Eastern Shore, this is the single most common reason a garage door stops working entirely, more than opener failure or track misalignment.
How Long It Takes
A standard spring replacement, single or matched pair, is usually a same-visit repair once we're on site with the right spring in the truck - most jobs run under two hours. What can stretch it out is a nonstandard spring size or a door old enough that the drums and cable need replacing alongside it, which we'll flag before we start, not after.
We cover Daphne and the surrounding towns out to Spanish Fort, Fairhope, Loxley, Point Clear, Prichard, Satsuma, and Tillmans Corner, so drive time to your address is the other variable - closer jobs get scheduled tighter. One honest limit: if your spring size is uncommon or your door is old enough that parts aren't stocked locally, we may need a day or two to get the right spring in rather than force a mismatch onto your door.
